Cast Iron Wok: Use, Care & Safety Guide

Thank you for choosing Wren seasoned cast iron cookware! To ensure a long-lasting and enjoyable cooking experience, please read this guide carefully before first use. These care instructions are designed to help maintain your cookware's performance, prevent damage, and ensure your safety.

Re-Seasoning

Your Cast Iron Wok naturally requires regular seasoning to prevent rust and maintain its non-stick properties. Although your wok comes seasoned, periodic re-seasoning is essential to keep it in top condition. This process helps oil bond with the iron, creating a durable, protective layer. Well-seasoned cast iron has a characteristic black finish, which is completely normal. If you notice food sticking to the surface or see rust developing, it's time to re-season your wok using the following steps:

Choosing the Right Seasoning Oil

Select an oil with a high smoke point, such as coconut, sunflower, or canola for best results.

Cleaning Before Re-Seasoning

Remove any food residue and rust by scrubbing the wok with hot, soapy water and a natural fibre brush. You can slightly warm the wok on the stovetop to make this process easier.

Dry the wok completely. One effective method is to heat it on the stovetop until all moisture evaporates, then allow it to cool naturally.

Re-Seasoning Methods - Using a Gas Stove

  • Apply a thin, even layer of seasoning oil to the wok's interior.
  • Wipe off any excess oil with a paper towel - the surface should feel dry, not greasy.
  • Place the wok on the stovetop and gradually increase the heat from low to medium-high.
  • Heat the wok until the oil reaches its smoke point and no visible residue remains.
  • Repeat this process 2-3 times for a well-seasoned surface.

Re-Seasoning Methods - Using an Oven

  • Apply a thin, even layer of seasoning oil to both the interior and exterior of the wok.
  • Wipe off any excess oil with a paper towel until the surface looks dry and matte.
  • Place the wok upside down on the middle oven rack.
  • To catch any drips, position a baking sheet or foil on a lower rack.
  • Bake at 180C to 230C for one hour, depending on the smoke point of your chosen oil.

Please ensure not using the glass lid when using the wok in oven.

After Seasoning

Allow the wok to cool completely before handling to prevent burns or damage.

Store in a dry place, and if stacking with other cookware, place a paper towel between them to absorb moisture and prevent rust. Repeating the seasoning process a few times will help build a strong, protective layer for long-term performance.

Cooking with Your Wren Cast Iron Cookware

General Cooking

Before cooking, always preheat your Wren cast iron wok gradually on low heat for a few minutes. This ensures even heating and prevents hot spots. Once preheated, add a generous amount of cooking oil to prevent food from sticking.

Heat Settings

Cast iron retains heat exceptionally well. After preheating, low to medium heat is sufficient for most cooking needs.

Oven Use

Wren cast iron wok is oven-safe up to 260C on its own. Do not use Wren cast iron wok with lid in oven due to presence of silicone and bakelite materials on the glass lid. This wok is broiler-safe when used without the lid.

Caution: Always use potholders or oven mitts when removing wok from the oven, as the handles and body will be extremely hot.

Utensils

Wren cast iron wok (20cm, 24cm, 27cm) is compatible with all types of utensils, including metal. However, cutting directly in the pan may damage the seasoning and lead to rust, requiring re-seasoning as outlined in the care guide.

Deep Frying

  • When deep frying, fill the wok no more than one-third full with oil.
  • Never leave hot oil unattended and never cover the wok with a lid while frying.
  • Use low heat when warming oil, as it can quickly overheat and ignite.

Preventing Thermal Shock

  • Never pour cold liquids into a hot wok.
  • Avoid placing a hot wok directly into a freezer or vice versa.
  • Heat or cool the wok gradually.

Cleaning & Storing Your Wren Cast Iron Cookware

Video Guides

Washing

Allow the wok to cool before washing. Placing a hot wok in cold water may cause thermal shock and lead to cracks or warping. Wash your Wren cast iron wok with warm water and Wren natural fibre brush or a sponge. For stubborn residue, use the Wren chainmail scrubber, which cleans effectively without stripping the seasoning. Scouring pads or steel wool may also be used, but these can remove seasoning, so re-season if needed.

Drying & Preventing Rust

Dry thoroughly after washing to prevent rust on exposed areas. Apply a very thin layer of seasoning oil all over the wok, wiping away excess to leave a dry, matte finish.

Storage Tips

Store with lids off to allow airflow and prevent moisture buildup. Place a paper towel between stacked cookwares to absorb moisture and prevent rust.

Warning: Never place Wren cast iron wok in the dishwasher. Hand wash only.
